By Published: Updated:

The Public Service Commission, West Bengal (WBPSC) has released the detailed advertisement for the recruitment of Industrial Development Officer (IDO) under the Directorate of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Government of West Bengal. The notification (in continuation of Indicative Advertisement No. 15/2024) announces 247 vacancies in Pay Level 10 and, most importantly, prescribes a revised, section-wise scheme of examination – a 100-mark written test divided into seven subjects, followed by a 15-mark interview. This guide explains the revised WBPSC IDO syllabus 2026 and exam pattern exactly as given in the notification, along with expected topics for each section, a preparation strategy, a 30-day study plan, FAQs and links to our free study notes for every subject.

Figure 2: Selection process for WBPSC Industrial Development Officer 2026

  • The Commission may fix category-wise cut-off marks in the written examination to call candidates for the interview.
  • There are no qualifying marks in the interview.
  • The Final Merit List is prepared on the aggregate of Part-I and Part-II out of 115 marks.
  • If two or more candidates have equal aggregate marks, the older candidate (by date of birth) gets preference.
  • Candidates with poor performance in the Bengali knowledge test (held at the interview) are liable to have their candidature cancelled (except candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali).

Category-wise Qualifying Marks (in the Aggregate)

CategoryQualifying marksOut of 115 (approx.)
UR / EWS / MSP40%46 marks
OBC38%43.7 marks
SC35%40.25 marks
ST / PwBD30%34.5 marks

The Commission may further relax qualifying marks if a sizable number of reserved posts remain unfilled. Qualifying marks are only the minimum – actual selection depends on merit and the number of vacancies.

How Negative Marking Works – Example

Each correct answer gives +1 and each wrong answer costs −0.25; unattempted questions get zero. Suppose a candidate attempts 80 questions and gets 64 right and 16 wrong:
Score = 64 × 1 − 16 × 0.25 = 64 − 4 = 60 marks.
Four wrong answers cancel one correct answer. So answer only when you can eliminate at least two options with confidence.

Instead of a single General Studies paper, candidates must now prepare seven subjects, with special emphasis on industrial safety, environment and energy, and the industrial scenario of West Bengal – areas directly linked to the work of an Industrial Development Officer. With negative marking of 0.25 and a 15-mark interview, accuracy and a balanced preparation across all sections are essential. Apply before 26 November 2026, follow the section-wise strategy and study plan above, and use our linked notes and mock tests to prepare.
