West Bengal Corner

Two of today's stories have a direct West Bengal link. INS Amini was delivered under a contract held by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Kolkata. GRSE is a Defence PSU and Miniratna company on the Hooghly that was the first Indian shipyard to deliver 100 warships. It is building eight of the sixteen ASW shallow water craft for the Navy, with Cochin Shipyard building the other eight. The first BIMSTEC Maritime Security Exercise also matters for Bengal, because West Bengal is one of India's Bay of Bengal coastal states, along with Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. BIMSTEC itself stands for the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, and its secretariat is in Dhaka. On National Cancer Awareness Day, remember that Kolkata's Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI) was inaugurated in 1950 by Irène Joliot-Curie, daughter of Marie Curie.
